Many of us don’t look forward to “that time of the month” aka periods, as it can come with its fair share of discomfort and pain. Period pain, also known as dysmenorrhea, can range from mild cramps to severe, debilitating pain. While over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol and Motrin are often used to manage period pain, several natural remedies can provide relief without the potential side effects of pharmaceuticals. In this Mom Tip Tuesday blog post, we’ll explore some effective and natural ways to alleviate period pain and promote overall well-being.
Understanding Period Pain
Period pain is primarily caused by uterine contractions, which help expel the uterine lining. These contractions can cause cramping and discomfort, along with other symptoms like lower back pain, headaches, and bloating. For some, period pain can be mild and manageable, however for others, it can be severe and disruptive. I distinctly remember not being able to function during the first few days of my period due to the pain and this continued until I had my first child.

Applying heat to your lower abdomen can help relax the muscles and alleviate cramps. You can use a hot water bottle, or a heating pad, or take a warm bath to ease the discomfort.
- Dietary Modifications:
Certain foods can worsen inflammation and period pain. Try reducing your intake of processed foods, sugary snacks, and caffeine. Instead, opt for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Herbal Teas:
Some herbal teas, such as ginger, chamomile, and peppermint, have natural anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe period-related discomfort.

Staying hydrated is essential during your period. Drinking enough water can help reduce bloating and alleviate some discomfort.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids:

Certain essential oils, like lavender and eucalyptus, can be used in aromatherapy to ease pain and relax muscles. I’m a huge advocate for CBD balms as well. If using an oil dilute a few drops in a carrier oil and massage it onto your lower abdomen.

Using menstrual hygiene products like menstrual cups or period underwear can also contribute to period pain relief. These products are more environmentally friendly than disposable pads or tampons and can potentially reduce cramping and discomfort associated with traditional menstrual products. If cups aren’t your thing I love these pads and tampons as the cotton doesn’t have so many additives that are irritating to sensitive skin. This is also a good option for pads.
While period pain is a common and sometimes uncomfortable part of menstruation, numerous natural remedies can help alleviate the discomfort. Experiment with these natural approaches to find what works best for you. Remember that everyone’s body is unique, so it may take some trial and error to discover the most effective methods for managing your period pain naturally.
