Mom Tip Tuesday: A Hidden Horse Rescue in El Paso Worth Visiting

If you’re looking for something different to do with your kids in El Paso and they love animals, add Horses Unlimited Rescue and Education Center to your list.
I actually found the rescue on TikTok while looking for something special to do for my son’s birthday. I called about a week ahead, and Victoria, the owner, was very responsive and helped me plan our visit.

Driving out to Horses Unlimited feels like you’re leaving the city and entering a completely different space. Picture rolling hills, wide-open land, a slight desert breeze on your face, and sunlight flickering across the landscape. It really makes you stop and appreciate how beautiful and diverse the desert can be. It’d just rained so the air was so fresh. You have to experience it in person. Keep reading for details. My kids can’t wait to go back. It was so fun to see them at peace enjoying the animals.

About Horses Unlimited Rescue

Victoria Davis founded Horses Unlimited in 2011. It is a nonprofit horse rescue in Far East El Paso that helps abused, neglected, and surrendered horses. The horses receive care, rehabilitation, and training before possibly being adopted or participating in riding lessons and equine therapy programs.

They offer horseback riding lessons for beginner through advanced riders, birthday experiences, field trips, trail rides when available, and horse therapy.

There are other animals to meet, too. We saw donkeys, goats, chickens, and the coolest barn cat. The kids loved being able to walk around and see all the different animals. They also sell eggs and soap onsite.

Our Horse-Riding Experience

Before anyone rode, the kids got to brush the horses and spend a little time getting acquainted with them. I thought this was such a nice part of the experience because it helped the kids feel comfortable, and gave them a chance to connect with the horses first.

Each child rode in the arena for about 30 minutes alternating horses safely. Victoria and her assistant helped them based on their individual comfort levels. Some of the riding was assisted, and the kids who felt comfortable were able to ride more independently.

Victoria and her assistant were amazing with us. They were patient, encouraging, and made sure everyone felt safe. I even got to ride one of the horses, which was so cool! I wasn’t expecting to get that experience myself, and it made the day even more memorable.

After riding, the kids gave the horses treats and then got popsicles of their own. It was the perfect ending to our visit.

Mom Tips for Visiting

The riding arena does not have shade, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen, hats, and closed-toe shoes.

The rescue can be easy to miss when you’re driving there for the first time. Look for the tall water tower and the turquoise sign near the front.

Be sure to call ahead before visiting. Horseback riding and other activities may depend on the weather, staffing, and availability of the horses. There are porta-pottys there but I would also bring hand wipes and sanitizer.

We had such an amazing time and definitely want to return. Visiting Horses Unlimited is not just another activity for the kids. It gives your family a chance to learn about horses, support a local rescue, and enjoy a side of El Paso that you may not see every day.

If you’re searching for horseback riding lessons, equine therapy, or unique family activities in El Paso, I highly recommend visiting Horses Unlimited. Also check out the last Mom Tip Tuesday for another travel destination near the 915.
